Strange trees bear a twisted fruit…
In the country of Nounna, the land is ruled over by twelve totalitarian monarchs who use the seemingly infinite power of the God-Totems to keep the lower classes in line, styling themselves as the representatives of God on earth. And as the only people able to rid the land of vicious beasts created of human sin called Vices, few dared to openly oppose their claims for many, many years. Yet one person did so. Her name was Grace Scarborough. She traveled across the land, preaching of a forgotten god, more powerful than the God-Totems, named Eloihim. As she gathered fellow believers, she decreed that it was time for a revolution…
…Blood on the leaves…
…But Grace and her followers failed. She was executed and the Eloihimists driven underground, lest they be killed along with her. Her name and legacy still lives on, but not for much longer, for the people are beginning to lose hope.
…And blood at the root.
Little has changed in the ten years since Grace’s ill-fated attempt rebellion. If anything, matters have only gotten worse for the working class as mass arrests of suspected Eloihimists tear families apart and ruin lives.
Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck, for the sun to rot…
Temperance MacPhereson is one of those who have lost someone to the government’s campaign against Eloihimists. But when her wayward sister, Hope, sends her a mysterious pendant for her birthday, she may have the chance to fix the mistakes of the past.
…For the wind to suck, for the leaves to drop…
With her close friend Caliban and a gentlemanly outlaw named Song, she flees from her hometown of Syadon in an act of self-preservation after an attack from Vices. It isn’t long before an officer of the army tracks her down, and surprisingly turns out to be sympathetic to their cause. A precognate, he tells her of a prophetic dream he had, of Temperance bringing peace back to Nounna by appealing with the gentlest and most reasonable of the monarchs, the Sun King. Of course, prophets have been wrong before…
…Here is a strange and bitter crop.
Tales of Virtue: Remnants of the Revolution
Oh, no…How can this be? Guards, come quickly! They’ve killed the Sun King!
